(Pictures from the Rip Curl Pro surfing competition)
Jess and I are sitting here on Bells Beach in the state of Victoria watching the surfing competition. Stephanie Gilmore just won the women's title. She holds the past three women's surfing titles in the world. The weather is sunny and the water and waves are beautiful, however I understand that it is not nearly as warm as it is back in VA. The high is probably only around 60. It will get warmer and warmer the more north we move.
Tomorrow we will head back to Melbourne where we'll be until the 7th. On the 6th we are going to see the Avett Brothers, one of the highlights of the trip for me.
Interesting note: we have concluded there is not much diversity among people. For the most part, they're all cookie cutters of each other. For example, the girls and women our age ONLY wear either spandex leggings, skinny jeans, or cut off jean shorts. They take a fashion statement, run with it, and never look back. Its quite interesting and somewhat boring. I guess Jess and I are way uncool with our boot cut jeans.
We have seen many kangaroos hanging out in the fields, just off the road, sort of like you see deer there. The lingo is quite amusing. We have heard many a "mate", "bloke", "bloody", etc.
Oh and Jess made an accurate observation: watching surfing is like fishing. For those of you not familiar, in these competitions 3 surfers go out in the ocean for a set amount of time. When they think they see a good wave they can take it. But obviously not every wave is a good one to surf. Sometimes they get a great ride, and sometimes just a little one (much like the thrill of catching a huge fish v. a tiny one.) Overall, there is a lot of patience and waiting involved.
More soon. We hope everyone has a blessed Easter.
